Keedac Board and senior management receive training in governance, legals and management from the Australian Institute of Management (WA), funded by a grant from Lotterywest, reflecting the Keedac commitment to best practice.

Keedac is the only Aboriginal Corporation in regional WA with this commitment to training standards.

These days, to get funding from government departments, it’s not enough to say we know what is needed by our community. Governments increasingly expect us to show levels of standards and governance to satisfy them that we are up to national standards.

Our Finance Manager, Linda Phillips, has a background of working with governments and companies in Perth and guided us in the process of lifting our standards to the required level.

We started with implementing proper compliance, health and safety procedures. We use EmploySure to advise us on employment documents, standards and legal requirements.

We obtained a grant from Lotterywest to pay for training from the Australian Institute of Management (WA) which has paid for:
a. Training for Board members, helping them understand what is required of a Board, by attending the Foundations of Governance course.
b. Our CEO has been studying and almost completed Cert IV Leadership & Management.

With Clontarf College, in 2021 we organized a training course in Cert IV Mental Health, here in Narrogin, which was attended by some of our staff and 9 other Aboriginal people.

This year, we got TAFE to offer courses in Narrogin, being Certs II and III Community Support, with 12 Aboriginal people currently studying.

The problem we always had, was finding people in our local community to work for us, who had such qualifications. By making training available in Narrogin, we have created a pool of locally qualified Aboriginal people who can work for Keedac, or anyone else.

Our employment policy for peer support workers is, where possible, to require workers that have at least Cert III in a relevant subject. It’s not always possible but we are getting there, with a majority of our support workers either qualified or studying to obtain a qualification.
